Nearly half of the lake space within the northwest is designated as a nature reserve, of which 125 hectares are occupied by the shallow water and island zone chook sanctuary in the Altmühlsee, which is made up of numerous individual islands.

The Altmühlsee barrier is a dam that fully surrounds the lake. The catchment areas in the Frankenalb karst space - i.e. from the Möhrenbach onwards - normally are not essentially consultant of the water circulation.
